Offer Description - Biomass potential in Romania

Romania has a great biomass energy potential, evaluated at about 7,594 thousand toe/year (318x109 MJ/year) representing about 19% of the total primary energy resources at the level of the year 2000, by the following fuel categories:
  • forestry and fire wood wastes, 1,175 x 103 toe/year (49.2 PJ/year);
  • sawdust wastes and other wood waste, 487 x 103 toe (20.4 PJ/year);
  • agricultural waste resulting from cereals, corn stems, vine wastes, etc., 4,799 x 103 toe (200.9 PJ/year);
  • biogas, 588 x 103 toe/year; and
  • wastes and urban domestic (household) waste, 545 x 103 toe/year.


Firewood and agricultural wastes (around 250,000 TJ) account about 80% of the total biomass while wood wastes from industrial processes about 6.5%. About 66% of firewood and 66% of wood wastes are located in the Carpathians and Sub-Carpathians. About 58% of agricultural wastes are found in the South Plain, West Plain and Moldavia. About 52% of biogas is found in the South Plain and the Western Plains.
