Several studies have been made at national level, evaluating mainly total renewable energy potential in
Slovakia. The results are sometimes different, depending up used method and available data.
The highest total potential in Slovakia has a solar energy. In regard of financial and technological
possibilities there is an assumption to utilize this kind of energy primarily for heat production and warm
service water production. The utilization of technical potential in compare with other technologies is
nowadays financially more exacting.
The second highest total potential has a geothermal energy. Attributes of geothermal waters in SR
predestines the utilization of this energy for heating and healing purpose. Technical potential is also
markedly lower by reason of technological problems, which are connected with chemical composition of
geothermal waters.
The highest technical as well as utilizable potential has a biomass. Biomass has large perspective in
heat production in the form of pellets, briquettes, wood chips and straw. Relatively fast solution of
biomass utilization is co-combustion with fossil fuel in heat power plants and by combined heat and
electricity production.
Biogas made of agricultural biomass and waste from sewerage plant is possible to use for electricity
and heat production. The most widely used RES for electricity production is water energy that covers
above 98 % electricity production from RES.
Utilizable potential of wind energy was calculated for 600 GWh in 2002 (by using the wind turbines with
the performance 500 – 1 000 kW). Following present experiences and technologic progress in turbines
construction is possible to assume, that this available potential is more than doubled.
